NIR Hyperspectral Imaging Analysis

Near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) has gained tremendous importance in the laboratories of very diverse fields (Forensics, food production, pharmaceutical production, etc.). At the same time, it has generated the need for applying different strategies of analysis and algorithms in order to extract the most relevant information from the hyperspectral images in the different analytical situations. This mini-course will explore basic concepts of hyperspectral analysis, plus it will make emphasis in the different analytical situations that can be found. The mini-course topics will be:
1 - Hyperspectral image acquisition, pre-processing and data selection
2 - Basic Chemometrics. Exploration. Regression. Segmentation
3 – Different types of hyperspectral images require different types of data analysis methods
4 - Integration of NIR-HSI in different analytical frameworks

Using R for NIR Spectroscopy
Duration: 2 Day Workshop - 14-15 September
Cost: $250 AUD
Day-1 on Saturday 14 September: Beginners Guide to Using R for NIR Spectroscopy
This workshop will cover the essentials of processing spectra data using R. It will cover data preparation, spectral preprocessing (smoothing, standardising, de-trending), PCA, and calibration using PLS regression
Day-2 on Sunday 15 September: Advanced Guide to Using R for spectroscopy
This workshop will continue with more advanced topics on processing and making an inference of spectra. It will cover Machine Learning methods, bootstrapping to enhance prediction, transferring calibration models from one instrument to another, and External Parameter Orthogonalisation (EPO) to remove unwanted features from the spectra.

Process Analytical Technologies (PAT)

Process analytical technology (PAT) was introduced by the FDA when they published their PAT Guidance in Sep 2004: Guidance for Industry, PAT — A Framework for Innovative Pharmaceutical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance The PAT Guidance was the first element in a series of initiatives that later were referred to as the QbD framework. This course introduces the PAT Guidance and highlights the importance of process understanding and risk-based approach to product development and manufacture using multivariate methods.

Chemometrics Workshop
Duration: 1-day Workshop Sunday 15th September
Cost: $150 AUD
Chemometric tools are fundamental for processing spectroscopic data and extracting as much information as possible from them. In this course, attention will be mostly focused on the chemometric approaches for predictive modeling, i.e., for relating the experimental data to a qualitative (classification) or quantitative (calibration) response. The theoretical aspects of the most commonly used methods, such as PCR and PLS, for calibration, and PLS-DA and SIMCA for classification, will be presented together with pratical guidelines on how to apply them to spectroscopic data. In this context, the fundamental role of validation will be also discussed and some good practices of how to correctly validate chemometric models will be suggested.
Lastly, a part of the course will be devoted to present the most commonly used approaches for pre-processing spectroscopic signals prior to chemometric model building.

Remote sensing and NIR workshop

Increased global travel has facilitated the spread of viruses like Zika. Researchers and personnel in the medical field are challenged to find quicker ways to combat and eliminate these viruses. ASD alongside Portable Analytical Solutions are organizing a workshop as part of the NIR 2019 conference in Australia’s Gold Coast. Learn how researchers like Dr Maggy Sikulu-Lord, from the University of Queensland’s faulty of Medicine is using the LabSpec4 NIR to detect Aedes mosquitoes before they become infections. See how her data collection is 18 times faster while costing one 110th as much compared to alternative methods like the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
Our workshop also discusses challenges to the mining, agriculture and meat industry as a result of heightened consumerism. For instance scarcity of viable area for mining, decreased levels of carbon in soil, hence impacting soil fertility and other environmental effects.
